Nom porté en Belgique, rencontré aussi sous la forme Olijff. Le rapport avec l'olive (néerlandais olijf) semble à exclure pour des raisons géographiques évidentes. Il devrait plutôt s'agir d'un nom de personne d'origine germanique ou scandinave. On rencontre d'ailleurs le patronyme Oliff en Angleterre, où on le rattache au scandinave Olaf (Anleifr, racines ans = nom de divinité + leifr = relique).
